It never fails that when we travel overseas people will ask about the food. We all agree that we have eaten very well on this trip! Perhaps we are all a bit more adventurous, or perhaps we have just found great places to eat, but we are definitely not starving!
Our visits to the orphanage involve a one hour commute so coming back into the city for lunch is not possible. B is a "smaller" village type community and we thought that we were going to have to pack a lunch each day. On day two we ventured out to find a place to eat and had just about given up when we found a small cafe type restaurant. It has outdoor seating as well as indoor. After eating one meal there, most of us were hooked. The meal was hot and drink cold and it only cost about $3 for each person. We came back the next day and we were all hooked, and the next, and the next. I am pretty sure we have eaten lunch there each day we have spent in B!
Last Sunday we took the afternoon and drove up into the mountains to eat at a favorite local restaurant. We ordered the beef kabobs. Two kabobs each. Wow. Each kabob had probably 10 oz of wonderful steak on them. Along with salad, potatos, and bread!
Other meals have included lagman, a noodle dish with beef and a spicy red sauce; gun fun(sp), a beef dish with potatos and peppers; pizza and Italian food.
For supper we go back to the guest house we are staying at and usually have a group meal with the six families who are here. One night we had homemade lasagna, last night it was chicken fajitas and tonight we had salad and homemade chicken rice soup. Very good and inexpensive. Breakfast is cold cereal, pastries, and yogurt from the grocery store. There are 10 adults in our travel group and the fridge is overflowing with juice, milk, eggs, sausage, cheese, yogurt, and leftovers from meals. No shortage of food!
We are very thankful that we have been able to eat well and inexpensively. Overall, it is not expensive to stay here as long as you know where to stay and how to eat. Our guest house bill for all 11 days, including laundry and unlimited WiFi, came to $508! That includes access to the kitchen. And since our adoption group has the whole house rented out, we don't have to worry about other guests, etc. It has been a lot of fun spending real time with people we have "known" for over 3 years.
Today we spent the morning at the orphanage. We brought yogurt for the kids yesterday and it was a huge hit. Asa let me spoon feed him his yogurt! Such a great sign! He is also interacting with both of us equally, no longer showing such a strong preference for Daddy, although if Daddy is not paying attention to him, he will yell, "DaDa!" to get Mike's attention! He calls me Mama and loves to make faces and giggle with me.
In the afternoon we ate lunch at a fun local pub. We were all ready for a meal that required no mental energy. Fat Boy's serves hamburgers and french fries. Good old American food. Kind of ;) It was good and filling and we had a great time. After lunch we went shopping for souvenirs and keepsakes for our kids.
love and blessings,
